Working at Blue Cross Blue Shield, the nation’s largest health insurer, was a great learning experience. The superb training at BCBS taught me: insurance fundamentals, medical terminology, customer service, research, training, management, and writing skills.
I started in the customer service department, working with members of the Federal Employee and Medicare insurance plans. From there, I was promoted to the correspondence writing department, where I researched insurance claims and wrote letters of explanation to senators, congressmen, hospitals, and physicians. I was then promoted again and became a training instructor – training the company’s customer service representatives.
At BCBS, I learned all about insurance claims, loss, premiums, risk, and underwriting. I also learned how to write clearly and concisely. Any lack of clarity could have legal ramifications, as we have seen in the now famous Oakhurst Dairy court case.
